Web Page Display Problems

The author's new (or revised) web pages require HTML clients ("browsers") which are capable of "Cascaded Style Sheets" (CSS) and "Portable Network Graphics" (PNG). Additionally, brightness and contrast of the visitor's monitor should be properly set.

This page describes the recommended preparations for being able to view (not only) the author's web pages without problems.

The proper Browser

Older versions of HTML browsers often have problems with StyleSheets - and Microsoft's Internet Explorer is known for ignoring the alpha channel of PNG images. As a result, the author's web pages might look completely different than intended.

Should you have problems viewing these web pages, it might be worth to consider the migration to one of the following HTML clients:

Opera

fast and stable; available for a number of platforms; may be bought or used as "adware" (continuously showing advertisements within the program window) for free

Mozilla Firefox

slim and fast, available for Windows, Linux and MacOS X; free Open-Source product

Netscape Browser

if you don't let yourself be discouraged by Netscape's cluttered web site, you might also be interested in their web browser

The proper Monitor Settings

The brightness of many computer monitors is set too low - and, to compensate for the poor display, the contrast is set too high, instead. When displaying images, such improper settings may result in a loss of details.

Please, try to adjust brightness and contrast of your monitor such that the 17 different shades of grey (especially the darker ones) become clearly visible and can be distinguished from each other.

Graukeil mit 17 unterschiedlichen Graustufen

The principally desireable "Gamma Correction" will not be explained here since it is much more difficult and can not be achieved just with the help of a few small "calibration images" (the result of such a process will depend on the type of your monitor (e.g., CRT or LCD) and any potential display scaling)
